Why I’m Participating in the Great Canadian Hike

I have been a long time activist for the Trans Canada Trail, which connects our beautiful country from sea to sea to sea. As I now live in an apartment above the Trans Canada Trail, my volunteer efforts with the Trans Canada Trail have come full circle, as I see how many people are on a day to day basis enjoying the Trans Canada Trail through Midland, Penetanguishene, Tiny, Tay, and beyond. However, there is more work to do: the trail is not fully connected, there are repairs required, signage to be installed and upgraded, etc.

This fall, I’m joining the Great Canadian Hike, a nationwide challenge where people across Canada will hike, bike, paddle or roll and log their kilometres to collectively reach 30,000 kilometres in 30 days — the length of the Trail from coast to coast to coast.

From September 20 to October 19, I’ll be logging my kilometres (my goal is to hike 150 kms and bike 75 kms) and raising funds to help keep the Trail accessible, safe, and thriving — for everyone, now and for future generations.

You can sign up to participate, donate directly to my fundraising page, or share my campaign with your network to help spread the word.

Let’s be part of something great — together.

My Updates

Day 1 = 21 kms biked

Saturday 20th Sep
Biked 21 kms from Penetanguishene (ON) to south of Perkinsfield on the Trans Canada Trail.

Day 1: bike the Thornton-Cookstown TCT (ON)

Friday 19th Sep
Tomorrow Saturday Sep 20 is the start of the Great Canadian Hike/Bike event, to benefit fundraising for the Trans Canada Trail. I have challenged myself to hike 150 kms and bike 75 kms between Sep 20 and Oct 19.

So far, I have raised $1388 for the Trans Canada Trail, but now comes the real challenge... putting in those kms.

I will therefore start with an approx. 25 km bike ride on the Thornton Cookstown Trans Canada Trail. Feel free to join me. The trail is flat, with just a very minor gradual incline (going south if I recall). Speed and distance are geared to recreational non-ebike cyclists, but e-bikers are welcome.

Meet at 12:45 PM in the parking lot at the SE corner of Innisfil Beach Road and hwy 27 (west of hwy 400). Be ready to roll at 1 PM sharp. We may stop in Cookstown for a refreshment before returning to Thornton.

Let me know if interested... Contact me at president@ghta.ca

UPDATE: instead of biking the TCT from Thornton to Cookstown, we biked 21 kms from Penetanguishene to south of Perkinsfield.
