Why I’m Participating in the Great Canadian Hike

There’s something magical about being on the Trail. The fresh air, the stillness of the trees, and the feeling of connection to nature and community. I’ve always turned to the outdoors for peace, health and perspective — and the Trans Canada Trail offers all that and more.

This fall, I’m joining the Great Canadian Hike, a nationwide challenge where people across Canada will hike, bike, paddle or roll and log their kilometres to collectively reach 30,000 kilometres in 30 days — the length of the Trail from coast to coast to coast.

From September 20 to October 19, I’ll be logging my kilometres and raising funds to help keep the Trail accessible, safe, and thriving — for everyone, now and for future generations.

Getting the team together

Things are going quite well! I'm growing more and more excited at the prospect of the event. As the weather this week has been nothing short of dreamlike, I can't help but to feel a sense of awe seeing my colleagues, friends and family ready to contribute however they can.

I'm happy to be doing this; Working for an outdoors company really is the icing on top of an already delicious cake and I can't wait to see how everything turns out. A few days ago I passed 50% of the $500 goal I had set for myself, now I'm really hoping I get to reach not only my personal goal, but also the team goal of $3,000 I set. I hope MEC would commit to a pledge for our shared team goal -- Wouldn't it be crazy to get $1 for every KM the team can log during that period ? It'd make the $3,000 goal much more realistic and attainable.

I realize it'll be hard to reach the team goal without that, most of my teammates are very busy with their studies and as fun and inspiring as this initiative is, I certainly can't blame anyone for not keeping it front of mind. I'm just happy to share this with like-minded friends and I'm excited to discover and share our favourite spots.

Autumn is going to be amazing 😄

Taking the first steps

Because things are always more fun when you get to do them with the people you love. I've been plotting for a few weeks now to get involved with the Great Canadian Hike, and I couldn't be more delighted to actually take the first steps by creating my page and that of the team I have the pleasure of working with at the MEC store in Laval, QC.

Honestly have no idea how this will all go, but seeing as how my colleagues are already very active people (much more so than myself), I'm inspired to step alongside them not only for the betterment of my health, but that of our shared community and the beautiful Canadian outdoors we get to enjoy and might sometimes take for granted.

I'm excited to get to participate in the event, and even more excited to get to do something meaningful with friends.

Hopefully we get a truly beautiful team page going and can log some serious distance! The outdoors are for all of us and committing to keeping our trails clean and enjoyable is a pursuit we should all be able to get behind.
