Where is the Trans Canada Trail Anyway?

DATE: July 14, 2025

Wondering where to find the Trans Canada Trail? The short answer: it’s probably closer than you think!

The Trail stretches nearly 30,000 kilometres, crossing every province and territory and touching all three of Canada’s coastlines. It is an interconnected network of hiking trails, boardwalks, water routes, coastlines, and cycling paths that runs through more than 900 municipalities of all sizes. In fact, 80% of the country’s population lives within 30 minutes of a section of the Trail.

Joining the Great Canadian Hike is a great way to explore the Trail, whether you want to venture out somewhere new or just see a different side of your own community!

EVERYWHERE A SIGN

As you’re exploring the trail, keep an eye out for Trans Canada Trail signs!

If you see it, you’re on a section of the Trans Canada Trail! That means that no matter where you are, the trail is connecting you to people across Canada.

ALL TRAILS ARE WELCOME

As much territory as the Trans Canada Trail covers, there are still some parts of the country it hasn’t reached (yet). But don’t worry, you don’t have to be on a section of the Trans Canada Trail to take part in the Great Canadian Hike; you don’t even have to be on a trail. You can log your activity anywhere from a back-country trail to a neighbourhood sidewalk.

But if you are keen to explore the trails in your community, you can consult your municipality’s website or connect with a local trail group — there are passionate folks in every part of the country who will happily introduce you to the trails they love.
