We spoke with Trans Canada Trail staff members about how they're training for the Great Canadian Hike, how they’ve set their kilometre goals and their advice for getting outside and getting moving.
Meet Brenden
Hello! I’m Brenden Blotnicky, Manager, Network Development and Support with Trans Canada Trail. I like to say my favourite Trail sections are those I have not yet visited yet. I also love a sunrise run on the Atlantic View Trail.

How did you determine your kilometre goal for the Great Canadian Hike, and what activities will you be doing over the month?
I broke down my planned activities and set kilometre goals for each type:
- I'll be tracking walks this month so my goal for walking is about 50 kilometres.
- I’m also aiming to get out on the water with my canoe. We’ll aim for 5 kilometres of paddling.
- My cycling goal is relatively moderate, at 50 kilometres
- The fall is the best time for running, so barring injury resurfacing, I think 200 kilometres is quite reasonable.

What’s your strategy for meeting your kilometre goal?
What are you most looking forward to during the Great Canadian Hike?
How did you get started with outdoor activity, and what's one piece of advice you have for newbies?
- Just getting out the door is the hardest part.
- Stay disciplined, motivation always wanes
- Set a plan for the week so that you don't have to be a "weekend warrior" to meet a huge number/goal.
