Meet Our Team: Stacey Dakin

DATE: September 12, 2025

We spoke with Trans Canada Trail staff members about how they're training for the Great Canadian Hike, how they’ve set their kilometre goals and their advice for getting outside and getting moving.

Meet Stacey

Hi! I’m Stacey Dakin, Chief Program Officer at Trans Canada Trail. I’m passionate about connecting people to nature and each other through Canada’s iconic national trail. One of my favourite sections is the Ville de Longueuil Trail, which follows La Route Verte in Quebec — it might not be the most scenic route but it’s peaceful and next to home, making it not only a regular destination for me, but also a perfect spot to reconnect with nature any time of the week.

How did you determine your kilometre goal for the Great Canadian Hike, and what activities will you be doing over the month?

I set my kilometre goal by thinking about how I could challenge myself while still making time to enjoy the journey. I’m aiming for 100 kilometres over the month, combining hiking, walking, and potentially some cycling. It’s a great way to stay active, explore new sections of the Trail and celebrate my one-year anniversary with Trans Canada Trail!

What’s your strategy for meeting your kilometre goal?

Consistency is key! I plan to map out weekly hikes and walks, and I’m using the Trail as a way to unwind after work and connect with friends and colleagues. I’m also motivated by the cross-country Lean In Canada Women and Trails team, which adds a little motivation coupled with fun and a social element to staying on track.

What are you most looking forward to during the Great Canadian Hike?

I’m most excited about the sense of community that comes with the Great Canadian Hike. Seeing people from across the country come together to celebrate the Trail, share stories and support one another is incredibly inspiring. Plus, it’s a chance to highlight the amazing work being done to make the Trail more inclusive and accessible.

How did you get started with outdoor activity, and what's one piece of advice you have for newbies?

I got into hiking as a way to reconnect with nature and recharge mentally. It started with short walks and quickly grew into a love for exploring longer trails. It's also an affordable activity that I could easily do solo or with my family. My advice for newbies? Start small, be curious and don’t worry about pace or distance. The Trail is for everyone, and every step is a step towards something meaningful.
