Why I’m Participating in the Great Canadian Hike

There’s something magical about being on the Trail. The fresh air, the stillness of the trees, and the feeling of connection to nature and community. I’ve always turned to the outdoors for peace, health and perspective — and the Trans Canada Trail offers all that and more.

This fall, I’m joining the Great Canadian Hike, a nationwide challenge where people across Canada will hike, bike, paddle or roll and log their kilometres to collectively reach 30,000 kilometres in 30 days — the length of the Trail from coast to coast to coast.

From September 20 to October 19, I’ll be logging my kilometres and raising funds to help keep the Trail accessible, safe, and thriving — for everyone, now and for future generations.

You can sign up to participate, donate directly to my fundraising page, or share my campaign with your network to help spread the word.

Let’s be part of something great — together.

I’m continuing with the challenge until I complete the 150 KM since I raised my goal amount and donations were given based on my goal being Met. I am updating my fav page with this information.

DOGS OFF LEASH

Friday 3rd Oct
So turns out Killarney offers “dogs off leash” trails. Wow!! This blew my mind as I’d been here before many times with dog. - never knew.  As far as I know it’s the only trail system in the city that offers this. I got WAY more KMs in with dog off leash. And we both got WAY better workout ! 🏋️

happy trails everyone 🥳

Goal Kms

Friday 3rd Oct
Seems I overestimated the KMs I could average by underestimating the time involved. I blame the dog. 😜

Before the dog, 5 K was easily doable in 1 hr to 1 hr 30, on flat terrain. Add a hill or few, and sure, it’d take a bit longer.  But then things got
interesting.

Enter Rocky  - the ever- so-patient, while always- so -investigative Husky, with-a-touch of -shepherd. He loves to explore, so we stop at least 30 times an hour. Since this slows me down, after an hour of walking or hiking, I’m now amazed at how little terrain we’ve covered.  I’ve spared an hour and half now and then, and mistakenly spent many hours driving to and from trails in the past week. Some were absolute fails, and this worsened my timings. So, mostly local trails for the upcoming week. Oct 10 forward , things will get interesting for sure,  as I’ll be hiking with friends for many of the KMs up to Oct 19.

I tried to change my KMS GOAL in the fundraising dashboard but I can’t , so I’m still aiming for 150 KM by OCT 19..

It would be great to raise more $$ to support my goal. I find it inspires me to keep pressing forward.

Pressing on now!

Insanity Later - trail in Minto NB

Monday 22nd Sep
Insanity is right! You can’t park right near it, so there’s a few KM walk of trails to get to it. Lots of hilly jumps for mountain bikes , which were fun to climb up and down. Slight butt kicker but not nearly as hard as the past two days of hills. I’m seeing TONS OF CATERPILLARS. I’ll post on FB

Penniac BUTT KICKER

Sunday 21st Sep

Mom & Tots, Rock Bottom & Dozer Trail

Sunday 21st Sep
5 KM. ANOTHER butt kicker ! Basically walk straight up a steep hill and come back down. This one located in Penniac. 397 Feet elevation. 1 hr 16 Min. 2.3 Miles. Rough terrain and the leg back was easy to veer off trail - which I did!

Killarney Trail #4

Saturday 20th Sep
8.36 KM. This one kicked my butt at times. I’m definitely out of shape for steep hills! Guess I’ve spent too much time on “easy slopes”’lately. Wish I could share pics here of the terrain. It only allows one photo so I thought I’d add the ALL TRAILS caption at end of hike.

Day 1 Hiking Challenge

Saturday 20th Sep
To self: remember I must AVERAGE 5 K per day. Skip the shortcuts! Take no boring trails! Hike more than 5 K sometimes! Hike less than 5 K sometimes! And….Keep track of numbers so you are not walking 50 KM the day before the challenge ends! ! Here’s an idea: upload numbers to blog daily!

Hiking for another reason

Thursday 11th Sep
I’ve always enjoyed hiking and I do so on a regular basis.  I’d like to say every day of the year but I have skipped a day here and there , but  for no great reason.  The goal for this fundraiser is 5 KM per day. I selected this goal myself from a list of options. 5 K is not unusual but there are definitely days I don’t fit in 5 K, so I thought this goal was reasonable .  It’s doable , but challenging to commit to, and  I’ll have to commit to at least 5 K per day average in order to meet the relative goal.

I hope some of you who are reading this will consider joining the mission and create your own fundraising page. I’ll be the first to donate , so let me know!

Thank you for any support for the trails.  They mean a lot to many people. In NB, with more trails being paved on city trails, it’s  meant more roller blading , and more options for wheeled or motorized vehicles for people who otherwise were restricted to sidewalks.

Thank you to my supporters
